JACKSON, Miss. - Mississippi University for Women baseball took Berry College – which received votes in the NCAA Division III pre-season poll – into extra innings, eventually falling by a 5-4 score. The Owls are 0-3, while the Vikings improved to 3-1.
The W trailed 1-0 after BC plated a run in the first inning. The Owls knotted matters at 1-1 in the second, thanks to an unearned run on a Vikings' error. Berry regained the upper hand, 2-1, in the bottom of the third and held it through five frames.
In the top of the sixth, The W wrested the lead away thanks to a two-run double off the bat of
Tanner Evans. Evans' hit plated
Avery Benson and
Austin Telano, who had reached on a walk and single, respectively.
In the bottom of the seventh, Berry pushed across the equalizing run. The 3-3 score stood through 10 innings and into the 11th.
In the Owls at-bat in the 11th, pinch-hitter Dean Bevell slapped a leadoff single to right and was sacrificed to second base. Bevell moved over to third on
Thomas Tucker's ground out to first.
That brought
Blaize Gann to the plate with two down and the potential winning run 90 feet away. Gann smacked a 2-1 offering into right that allowed Bevell to trot home and give the Owls the 4-3 lead.
However, The W was unable to hang on to the advantage long. In the bottom half of the 11th, the Vikings leadoff batter singled was sacrificed to second and scored the tying run on a double. That was followed by another single to give Berry the walk-off over the Owls.
Tyler Temple took the tough loss, throwing the final 5.1 innings. Temple allowed six hits and three runs, all earned.
Payton Springfield went the first 5.0 innings and was charged with two earned runs. Both hurlers for The W registered five strikeouts, apiece.
MUW's 11-hit offense was led by five players – Tucker, Gann,
Joel Estabrook, Telano and Evans – who each collected a pair of hits. Evans managed a pair of doubles.
Evans had two runs batted in, and Gann the other, for the Owls.
The W will next be in action Feb. 18-20 at the Huntingdon Tournament in Montgomery, Ala.
