Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Chamberlain, Wallace lead Owls to women’s basketball win

COLUMBUS, Miss. – MG Chamberlain and Rokila Wallace each turned in double-double games to lead the Mississippi University for Women to a 52-48 home court win over Arkansas Baptist University. With the victory over the Buffaloes, the Owls picked up their second win in the past three games (both in Pohl Gym).

"I thought we came out with great energy in the first half," The W Head Coach Drew Johnson said. "We came out and executed really well. In the third, ABC ramped up the pressure and began executing against our zone. Give them credit, they did a great job, and caused us to make some mental errors that resulted in them taking the lead. However, give our kids credit for fighting back in the fourth, executing down the stretch, and ultimately sealing the victory. We are beginning to see that consistency is the key to success. The closer we get to true consistency, the more favorable the outcome will be."

And Chamberlain has been the model of consistency of which Johnson spoke. Against ABC, Chamberlain had a game-leading 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Chamberlain was 7-for-13 from the field and 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. She also had three assists to her credit.

Wallace, who has been a scoring machine for The W, booked 11 points for her 15th double-figure scoring game in 16 games played. Wallace, a guard, grabbed a game-leading 12 boards to give her a team-best six double-double games in 2021-22.

Freshman Maddie Guerin was the Owls' third player with double figures, adding 13 points. Guerin shot an efficient 6-of-9 from the floor and also had one blocked shot.

"It was great to see us bounce back from Thursday and get the win tonight," Johnson added. "MG continues to take steps forward and show why she's an all-American nominee. She was rock solid for us down the stretch and converted on plays that determined the outcome of the game. Rokila showed a lot of heart and grit, netting another double-double, while playing with a foot injury. I can't say enough about her ability to ignore pain and make the plays necessary to win. She was invaluable for us today."

"Hannah Duran demonstrated the ability to keep us on course yet again with a 9-3 assist-to-turnover ratio. A freshman with that much poise is scary; she's going to be the school's all-time leader in assists before she's done here."

The W women will cap the 2021-22 season at home on Thursday (Feb. 17) versus Pensacola Christian College. It will also be Senior Day.
