JACKSON, Tenn. – The Mississippi University for Women women's and men's tennis teams both earned road wins on Monday at Lane College. Both Owls' team defeated the host Dragons by identical 8-1 scores.
In the men's contest, The W took a 3-0 lead after doubles. At No. 1 doubles,
Mikey Duncan and Luis Leal Jr. were 8-6 winners. At No. 2 pairs, it was
Kory Scales and Kris McGowan winning, 8-7, while Jacob Vickers and Victor Gomez got the "W" at No. 3 doubles.
At No. 1 singles, Duncan topped the Dragons' Lawrence Johnson, 6-0, 6-3, with Lane getting its lone point of the match at No. 2 singles.
At No. 3 singles, Gomez won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, while Vickers went three sets – 6-4, 4-6, 10-3 – to earn the win at No. 4 singles. Scales tipped LC's Jamal Mason, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, with
Sam Yarborough winning at No. 6.
"We fought hard on every point and worked together to overcome what were some tough weather challenges," Duncan said. "But I'm really proud of the effort everyone made today"
Just like the men, the Owl ladies swept doubles to begin their run. At No. 1 doubles,
Nicole Rensink and
Karina Garcia blanked their Dragons' foes, 8-0. At No. 2 doubles
Maggie Taylor and
Mandy Ferguson teamed up, with Mallory parker and
Karen Calzadilla winning at No. 3 doubles.
"We just played a really good game today," Rensink said of partnering with Garcia. "I really enjoyed being on the courts together"
At singles, The W's
Sarah Kackley and Parker both threw 6-0, 6-0 shutouts at their Lane opponents for the Nos. 1 and 2 positions, respectively. It was Parker's first collegiate singles win.
The Dragons won third singles in three sets. The Owls' trio of Taylor, Ferguson and Calzadilla took the wins at Nos. 4-6 singles.
