BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women blew a big led and, ultimately, the game in an 11-10 walk-off loss at Blue Mountain College. The Owls fell to 5-12 with the setback, while the Toppers improved to 16-12.
The W came out of the gate like gangbusters, with nine runs and eight hits in the first four innings to amass a 9-1 lead. In the first frame,
Blake Estabrook had an RBI single and
Avery Benson a two-run double, as The W led 3-0.
BMC got a run back in its half of the first, before the Owl added a pair in the third, thanks to an RBI ground out off the bat of
Landon Clark and a run-scoring single by
Baker Watson that made it 5-1.
In the fourth, MUW put up four more runs and was seemingly in cruise control. With the bases loaded and none out,
Dane Bevell drew a walk to plate
Joel Estabrook with the team's sixth run of the day. Clark was next up and hit into an RBI fielder's choice. Watson then laced a two-run double that upped the Owls' cushion to 9-1 and the contest not even at the halfway point.
However, it would be the last offensive that The W would see for several innings. MUW would not register anoter hit until the ninth inning, despite adding an unearned run in the seventh.
In the meantime, the Toppers' offense revved up down the stretch. The hosts scored single runs in the fourth and fifth, four in the sixth and got a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to tie the contest at 10-10. BMC won it in their final at-bat, after a leadoff walk and a pair stolen bases put the winning run 90-feet away with one out. A single brought in the game-winning run moments later.
Benson, the Owls' catcher, finished the evening 3-for-5 with a double. He had two runs scored and two runs batted in.
Leadoff man
Blaize Gann went 2-for-5 with two runs and a walk. Watson was 2-for-5, with the double and two RBI. Clark finished with a pair of RBI, as well.
Joel Estabrook (0-2), The W's fifth pitcher of the game, took the loss. He had three strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work. Starter
Kirby Ross went 2.2 innings, gave up one hit and had three "Ks",
