COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Mississippi University for Women's volleyball team swept Fisk University, 3-0, in its only match on Day 1 of the Owls Invitational. The Owls won by set scores 25-22, 25-17, 25-17 over the Bulldogs.
Day 2 on Sunday will be much busier for The W, as the team will play three matches. MUW will face off versus Agnes Scott College at 9 a.m., Dillard University at 1 p.m. and Lane College at 3 p.m. to close out the two-day event at Pohl Gym.
MUW dispatched of Fisk with a little bit of "Vegas" volleyball: dealing out 16 aces versus the Bulldogs. And it was sophomore
Maggie Griggs who was the Owls' biggest dealer. Griggs served up six aces on her own, while also knocking down six kills.
Sophomore
Hannah Duran added three aces to the coffers.
Jasmine Kelly,
Maddy Suggs and
Llayne Skinner each aced the Bulldogs twice, with
Camryn Johnson serving one ace.
Skinner also topped The W offense with seven kills and made six digs on defense, as well. Duran and Johnson combined for 22 assists, 12 and 10, respectively. Suggs, the Owls libero, had a team-high 14 digs.
Up front,
Micaela Hudgins had a team-best four blocks. Skinner,
Zoe Hansen and Kelly each had two blocks. Kelly also had five kills on the books, as well.
