MARSHALL, Texas - Mississippi University for Women men's soccer took on first-time opponent East Texas Baptist University on the road and came out on the short end of a 2-1 score. The loss dropped the Owls to 1-4-2 on the year, while the Tigers improved to 4-2-1.
"We played well for stretches of the game, especially in the second half," MUW Head Coach
BJ Pheasant said. "When we play hard and work together it is special to watch. We were inconsistent today. A lack of attention to detail cost us defensively and we weren't able to overcome it."
The perennially-strong ETBU side out-shot The W by an 18-4 margin overall and 8-3 in shots-on-goal.
The Owls trailed 2-0 at the half, as ETBU netted its goals a little less than two minutes apart: at 23:29 and 25:19 minute marks. MUW's defense kept the Tigers caged in the second stanza by pitching a shutout the final 45 minutes.
The W's lone goal of the evening came from
Aussie Salgado in the 86th minute.
Pedro Santana assisted.
The goal was Salgado's second of the year and tied him for the team lead.
DJ McElroy,
Alejandro Pocasangre and
Tres Ray had the Owls' other shots on-goal. Goalkeeper
David McCutchen had six saves in the contest.
The W will conclude its "Texas Two-Stop" with a match at LeTourneau University on Saturday at 3 p.m.
