COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women men' soccer saw he curtain come down on its 2023 season with a 4-1 loss in its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) matchup with Greenville at the Roger Short Soccer Complex. The Owls (3-10-6, 1-5-3 SLIAC) were in a must-win situation versus the Panthers (8-7-4, 4-1-4 SLIAC), to gain the final berth in the SLIAC tournament and continue their season.
However, it proved not to be for MUW.
At least for the opening half, things looked like they might be headed in the right direction for The W. After giving up a quick goal to GU (28 seconds into the match), MUW bounced back in the 8th minute to knot the game at 1-1.
Joseph Cumberland scored the goal off of a perfectly-placed corner kick from
Luis Morales.
The match remained tied through the half.
But the second half belonged to the Panthers, keeping the ball in the attacking half most of the 45 minutes. That resulted in the go-ahead goal in the 54th minute, along with insurance goals in the 65th and 77th minutes for the 4-1 final result.
MUW starting senior goalkeeper
Zach Seymour registered three saves. Fellow senior
David McCutchen came on in the second half and had five saves.
