Owls volleyball falls to Belhaven in five, 3-2

COLUMBUS, Miss. – For the second time this season, Mississippi University for Women and Belhaven University went five sets in a volleyball match and, for the second time The W came out on the short end of a 3-2 decision. The Owls (2-9) lost to the non-conference Blazers (4-15) by set scores of 17-25, 10-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-8 at Pohl Gym.
 
After having the visiting BU squad on the ropes by winning the first two sets in convincing fashion, MUW struggled out of the gate in each of the final three sets. Despite making the final scores close, the deficits proved too much to overcome for the Owls.
 
Amonie Silas was the lone Owl in double-digit kill totals, with 12 on the evening. Silas hit .184 for the match and had a pair of blocks.
 
Teammate Maggie Griggs added eight kills. Llayne Skinner booked seven kills and Haley Ridings added five. Ridings had a sterling .444 attack average in her nine attempts. She also had three assisted blocks and a pair of aces served.
 
Newcomer Allison Carpenter's six aces led all players, as the Owls amassed 11 winners as a team. Carpenter was also solid in the backrow a .933 receiving percentage (one error in 14 tries) and produced 15 digs.
 
Setter Hannah Duran had a double-double by rolling up 20 digs and 16 assists. Fellow setter Camryn Johnson chipped in 12 assists and nine digs.
 
Libero Madison Suggs had 18 digs, seven assists, and two aces. Suggs also posted a .955 receptions percentage, making just one error in 21 attempts.
 
Zoe Hansen was a force up front for The W with five total blocks (one solo), to go along with four kills. Selena Winston had four blocks (two solo) and three kills.
