BATESVILLE, Ark. – Mississippi University for Women men's basketball could not overcome a blazing shooting effort by Lyon College on the road, 94-65, in a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) setback. The loss left the Owls at 3-5 overall (0-3 in the SLIAC), with the Scots upping their record to 6-4 on the year (and 3-0 in the SLIAC).
The evening boiled down to numbers and, unfortunately for The W, they all went in the hosts' favor. MUW had creditable shooting results for the game – 33 percent from the field, 44 percent from three-point range, and 76 percent from the free throw line – but Lyon just had one of those nights where you just tip your cap. The Scots shot 63 percent from the floor overall and 70 percent from beyond the arc, while converting 88 percent from the charity stripe.
To put it into perspective, The W had 15 more shot attempts, 63-48, than LC tried. But the Scots ended up with nine more field goals made (30-21) than did the Owls for the game. Lyon was able to parlay that hot shooting touch into a 47-31 halftime cushion.
Senior
Dariun Doss continued his stellar play of late for MUW, finishing with game-highs with both 18 points and nine rebounds. Doss made good on 4-of-9 from the field and was 10-of-12 from the free throw line, as he narrowly missed out on his second double-double of the season.
Sophomore
Josh Dukes was solid from the floor, connecting on 5-of-7 attempts, good for 11 points.
Brye Hopkins and
Tarik Islamovic booked eight and seven points, respectively.
The Owls found themselves out-rebounded, 34-30, for one of the few times this season. The Lyon bench did out-duel the MUW reserves, 40-23. The Scots also finished on the upside for points in the paint, 30-16.
The W will take a respite from its SLIAC slate and next play a pair of games in Pennsylvania, beginning with a Saturday (Dec. 16/ 2 p.m. CT) tilt versus Immaculata University.
