JACKSON, Miss. - Junior
Conley Langford scored a team-leading 24 points, but it was not enough to prevent a 72-55 non-conference loss at Millsaps College at The Hanger Dome. The loss dropped the Owls to 2-5 overall, while the Majors (9-1) extended their winning streak to nine straight.
Â
MUW held its own for three of the four quarters versus MC. The W trailed 17-15 after one quarter and was down by a manageable 33-29 margin at halftime. The difference was in the third period, as Millsaps would outscore the Owls by a 26-10 count in the stanza. MUW finished strong by holding a 16-13 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter.
Â
Langford was The W's lone double-digit scorer. Similarly, Millsaps' Haley Franklin was her team's only double-figure scorer with a game high 32 points. The difference came down to depth, as the Majors had a total of 12 different players contribute points, while the Owls roster had just seven scoring individuals.
Â
Langford produced another quality effort for MUW, with her seventh-consecutive double-figure scoring game in as many outings this season and her third game with 20-plus points in the last four outings. Langford was 7-of-16 from the field, overall, and was a sterling 5-for-6 from three-point range. She also went 5-for-6 from the free throw stripe and had a team-best seven rebounds on her ledger.
Â
A trio of Owls' players –
Leileigh Moody,
Claire Leak, and
Darby Pitts – each tallied six points. Leak drained a pair of treys and pulled down six rebounds, as well.
Â
Zoe Essary and
Jas Patrick contributed five points, apiece, with
Aaliyah Moody chipping in three to round out The W scorers. Essary grabbed five caroms and also made a pair of steals.
Â
The W women will put away their sneakers for the rest of calendar 2023, resuming action on January 4, 2024 at home versus Blackburn College in what will be the program's first-ever St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at home.
