MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The 2023 season opener for the young Mississippi University for Women baseball team proved to be a bit of a struggle, falling to host Huntingdon College, 15-2.
The Owls (0-1) found themselves behind the proverbial eight ball early. The Hawks (1-0) would jump on MUW starter
Campbell McCluney for seven earned runs and seven hits. McCluney registered just one out before giving way to reliever
Brandon Fenimore, as the second of an eventual four relievers to take the hill for The W.
It was a deficit that proved insurmountable. Huntingdon was able to run-rule the Owls by amassing a 10-run lead after seven frames.
The MUW bats were unable to match the Hawks' sticks. The W managed just two hits, while HC had 17 on its home field.
Leadoff batter and shortstop,
Tyler Estabrook, went 1-for-3 and also drove in MUW's first run of the year with his sacrifice fly in the fifth that plated
Jake Williams, who had reached on a walk.
Leftfielder
CJ Wise went 1-for-1 with a pair of walks for The W's other hit.
Tanner Evans' sacrifice fly in the sixth drove in Wise with MUW's second run of the game.
The Owls are scheduled to face Emory University on Saturday at 12 p.m. in their second game of the Huntingdon Tournament.
