PENSACOLA, Fla. – Every now-and-again, it seems the stars all align and a basketball team has "one of those games" that produces a myriad of angles, apart from a victory. The Mississippi University for Women experienced just such a situation after its 97-86 win at Pensacola Christian College on Saturday.
Chief among the sidelights was the Owls' (11-13) – ranked in a tie for No. 8 in the latest United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) coaches poll – solidifying their position by putting a halt to the Eagles (14-9) robust 10-game winning streak. The W also swept the season series versus PCC, winning 80-75 in Columbus on Dec. 6, as well.
Head Coach Dean Burrow's crew also tied the 2019-20 squad for most wins in a season in the program's young history, by notching its 11th "W". Burrows and company could have an opportunity to eclipse that mark if it qualifies for the USCAA post-season. But the Owls will have to wait until the March 5 USCAA bracket announcement to know if that will be a possibility.
For Pensacola, Fla., native - and The W starting post player -
Thomas Wright, it was also a "homecoming" for junior. Wright, making his first return to his old stomping grounds as a member of the MUW squad, had a monster game.
With apologies to Bo Derek, it was Wright who was the perfect "10" on this night. Wright, entering the game ranked No. 2 in USCAA field goal percentage, went 10-for-10 shooting from the field (and 5-of-6 free throws) on his way to a team-leading 25 points, raising his shooting average to 64.9 percent (trailing only teammate
Brye Hopkins' 71.7 percent). Wright also hauled in seven rebounds, passed for three assists and made two steals.
But Wright had plenty of help versus the Eagles, namely senior point guard
Milos Zeradjanin. The Zemun, Serbia import cobbled together a 21-point effort, as well as team highs with nine rebounds and seven assists. Zeradjanin was 4-of-9 from the floor – 4-of-7 from beyond the arc – and drained 9-of-11 free throws.
Zeradjanin also moved into the No. 3 position on the year for USCAA three-point field goal percentage at a nifty 45.0 percent.
Shon Wright and
Dariun Doss booked 15 and 10 points, respectively. Each also pulled down four rebounds.
As a team, The W shot 51.6 percent (33-64) from the floor overall. The team also had the second-most three-point field goals made in game in school history, with 12 (out of 25 attempts).
