Owls softball sweeps Westminster, 5-0 & 12-1

COLUMBUS, Miss. -  Solid pitching and timely hitting were the order of the day for the Mississippi University for Women's softball team in a sweep over Westminster College at Don Usher Field. The Owls (4-3) won by scores of 5-0 and 12-1 over the Blue Jays (0-6).
 
The W's tandem of Riley & Rylie – Phillips and Grisham – led the team in the twinbill victory.
 
In game No. 1, Phillips was a one-woman wrecking crew over Westminster. Phillips went 3-for-4, with a pair of doubles. She drove in four of MUW's five runs and had a stolen base, as well.
 
Phillips' RBI single in the third plated Jessica Deming with the first run of the game. After the Owls added a run in the fourth, Deming had an RBI double in the fifth and a two-run double in the sixth to seal the win for MUW.
 
Meanwhile, Grisham was in total control from the circle, as she improved her personal record to 3-0 and has yet to yield an earned run in 19.0 innings. Versus the Blue Jays, Grisham scattered three hits and had six strikeouts in notching her second shutout of the year.
 
Maiya Joe and Makalyn Cowley had the other two hits by The W. Joe also had a double.
 
In game No. 2, it was Grisham's bat that did the loudest talking. Grisham was 3-for-4, with a double and a triple, on her way to four RBI in the run-rule shortened game.
 
Anna Sandlin went 2-for-3 and also slapped a double. Sandlin drove in three runs, as well.
 
Starter Avery Byerley was lifted after 1.2 innings of work, after walking her fourth batter. Bailey McClellan threw 3.1 innings of shutout relief work to notch her first win with the Owls.
 
The teams play the series finale on Sunday at 12 p.m.
