COLUMBUS, Miss. - Mississippi University for Women's softball team defeated Westminster College on Sunday, 11-3, to sweep the three-game series over the weekend. The victory also extended the Owls' (5-3) current win streak to four games
Both teams amassed eight hits. However, The W managed to string theirs together early and build the comfortable cushion. MUW scored two in the first, five in the second and added four more in the third.
Junior centerfielder
Maddy Suggs – a native of Caledonia, Miss. – had the only multi-hit game in the Owls' lineup. Suggs went 3-for-3, with a pair of doubles, raising her batting average to a team-leading .438. Batting ninth in the order, Suggs scored twice and had a stolen base on her ledger, as well.
Meanwhile, the Owls' first three players in the order drew five walks and scored five runs. Senior
Riley Phillips (1-2) drove in two runs in the three-hole, while
Rylie Grisham (1-1) drove in three more in the clean-up slot.
Junior
Alysa Newman added an RBI triple in the third frame.
Sophomore
Jade Rushing (1-1) went 4.0 innings in the circle for her first win of the 2023 campaign. Rushing scattered five hits and was charged with two runs (one earned).
Avery Byerley tossed the fifth inning to close out the game.
