MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Mississippi University for Women baseball was unable to overtake Edgewood College (Wis.), despite battling back from a two-run deficit, in a 7-2 loss played at Huntingdon College. The three-team Huntingdon Tournament will wrap up on Saturday.
In the top of the third, Edgewood scored its first run of the day on a wild pitch. However, that fact turned out not to matter after
Robby Canten allowed a solo home run, which would have driven in the run anyway, that made it 2-0 in favor of the Eagles.
But the Owls got even in the bottom of the fourth frame. An
Ethan Carrouth sacrifice fly plated
Tyler Estabrook (2-5). An RBI single by
Austin Telano (1-4) drove in
Tanner Evans (1-3) to knot the game at 2-2.
Edgewood scratched out single runs in both the fifth and seventh innings to lead 4-2 after the stretch.
The Owls missed an opportunity to climb back into the game in their half of the seventh. With two out, singles by
Matthew Windham (1-2, 2 walks) and Estabrook sandwiched an error at short that allowed The W to load the bases. Unfortunately for the Owls, Evans was induced into a grounder to short that turned into a force out at second to end the threat and leave the score at 4-2.
The Eagles added a pair of runs in the eighth and another in the ninth to create some separation in the latter innings.
Canten (1-2) took the loss for the Owls. He went 6.0 innings and permitted four of the Eagles' 10 hits in the game. Canten, who was charged with three earned runs, walked three and struck out six.
Connor Reilly went the final 3.0 innings, giving up six hits and four earned runs. He struck out two and walked one.
The W will lay two games on Saturday, as the tourney schedule was altered due to the anticipated rain on Sunday. MUW faces Castleton at 10 a.m. and then takes on host Huntingdon at 7:30 p.m.
