COLUMBUS, Miss. – Dorothy had it right: There's no place like home. Just ask the Mississippi University for Women baseball team after its 6-1 win over Millsaps College at Heritage Field.
The Owls (3-18), playing their first home game since February 22, used some home cooking to snap a 16-game skid. Consequently, The W's last victory goes back to its doubleheader sweep of Greenville on that home date of Feb. 22.
On a day when MUW honored its five seniors –
Xavier Harrison,
Austin Telano,
Tanner Evans,
Ethan Carrouth, and
CJ Wise – the team led wire-to-wire versus the Majors (16-18). After scoring one in the first, The W added three in the fourth and two more in the fifth, building a 6-0 advantage before Millsaps spoiled the shutout with its lone run in the top of the sixth.
After plating an unearned run in the first, the Owls' offense clicked in the fourth.
Chandler Anderson's RBI single drove home
Johnny Setchfield. The leadoff man
Matthew Windham continued his torrid pace with a two-run double to make it 4-0.
Windham – by going 2-for-5 in the game – extended his personal hitting streak to eight games. In the skein, Windham has had six multi-hit games.
In the fifth, Anderson's bases-loaded single brought in Setchfield and Carrouth for the 6-0 cushion.
In all, the teams used a combined 12 pitchers: seven by the Majors and five for the Owls. MUW starter
Zack Egan allowed one hit in 3.0 scoreless innings. Since Egan did not go the requisite innings for the win, reliever
Brandon Fenimore was credited with the victory with a scoreless fourth frame.
Anderson went 2-for-4 as the only other Owl with more than one hit. Anderson drove in three runs and scored once.
