ATLANTA, Ga. – The most productive offensive day of the 2023 season for Mississippi University for Women baseball was not enough to help it avert an 11-7 loss at Emory University's Chappell Park. The Owls (3-21) were swept in the three-game set by the Eagles (23-10).
MUW amassed 13 hits versus the high-flying Eagles. However, one bad inning – in this case a six-run fifth by EU – doomed The W's chances to salvage a game in the series.
In the first, the Owls jumped out to a quick 2-0 advantage.
Matthew Windham drew a leadoff walk and, after moving his way to third, came home on a balk.
Tyler Estabrook's RBI single through the left side of the infield drove in Austin Relano, as well.
A three spot in the fourth gave Emory the lead, but MUW responded with a pair of runs of its own in the top of the fourth. Back-to-back doubles by
Tanner Evans and Estabrook accounted for one run. Then with one out,
Jake Williams' RBI single plated Estabrook to make it 4-3 in favor of The W.
Emory tied it at 4-4 in their half of the fourth, before putting the game out of reach with that fateful fifth. In the inning, the Eagles scored four times and forced two MUW pitching changes before an out was recorded, eventually taking a 10-4 lead.
MUW tallied single runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
The middle of the Owls' order did the most damage, as Evans and Estabrook – batting Nos. 5 and 6, respectively – combined for seven of the team's 13 hits. Evans was 4-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Estabrook finished 3-for-5 with a run and three "ribbies."
Windham (2-5, walk) and
Chandler Anderson (2-5) - batting 1-2 in the order – both had multi-hit games, as well.
Campbell McCluney went 4.0-plus innings in absorbing the loss. McCluny gave of eight hits and six earned runs as the first of three MUW hurlers.
