Box Score COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women earned a Sunday morning win over Agnes Scott College, 6-3, at the Garrett Tennis Courts. For the Owls, the win over the Scotties improved the team to 4-7 overall and was their second "W" in the last three matches.
And The W got some key help from a new roster addition, but a face very familiar to those following MUW athletics. All-American women's basketball player MG Chamberlain debuted as a member of the tennis squad and immediately gave the team a big assist, as she was involved in two of the Owls' team points.
As the day opened with doubles play, Chamberlain and teammate
Macie Manasco made short work of their ASC foes by an 8-2 score. The point proved even more valuable as MUW lost the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles bouts, trailing the Scotties, 2-1, heading into singles action.
The W would dominate the individual matches, winning the Nos. 2-6 contests. And the Owls won four of those five victories in straight sets.
Chamberlain played her first singles action for the Owls at the No. 5 position. She came away with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Katherine Cox.
At No. 2 singles, it was
Sarah Kackley knocking off the Scotties' Iris Ray, 6-1, 6-1. At third singles, Manasco was a 6-0, 6-4 winner.
At No. 4 singles, freshman
Maggie Etheridge – who had her 8-match singles win streak snapped last week – began a new one, blanking her ASC foe 6-0, 6-0.
Etheridge is now 9-2 in singles for 2022-23.
Kelis Griffin, playing No. 6 singles, earned a grueling three-set win. Griffin won set on, 6-4, before dropping the second, 6-0. In the deciding third set, Griffin took a 10-7 win.
