COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Mississippi University for Women men's soccer team was finally able to join its fellow fall sport programs at The W, by notching the sport's first win as a full NCAA Division III member, thanks to its 7-0 drubbing of Oakwood University at the Roger Short Soccer Complex. The Owls improved to 1-4-1 overall, while the Ambassadors fell to 0-2.
Oakwood – which is MUW's most-played opponent in the team's brief history – proved to be the perfect foe for an Owls team entering the game looking for that elusive first win of 2023. With Friday's victory, The W men have won four-consecutive matches – and are uneaten in the last five bouts – versus Oakwood. MUW leads the all-time series, 6-1-1.
As a team, the Owls out-shot the Ambassadors by a 19-5 margin, overall, and had a 12-2 margin in shots on-goal. That gave The W better than a 63-percent shots on-goal percentage for the match.
Offensively, a trio of Owls –
Tres Ray,
Cristian Canas, and
Miguel Hernandez – each finished the afternoon with a pair of goals each.
Mo Diallo also joined The W's goal-scoring party. For Canas, his goals gave him a team-leading four netted for the year, while Ray and Hernandez each have three goals. Diallo has put two in the opponent's nets.
Ray and Canas were each credited with an assist, as well.
MUW goalkeeper
David McCutchen went the entire 90 minutes, registering two saves. His Oakwood counterpart, Gaston Prophete, had five saves.
The W will have a week off before playing its first-ever St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) match on September 22 at Spalding University in Louisville, Ky.
