COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women's volleyball team hosted the program's first-ever home St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) games in any sport on Saturday at Pohl Gym. But visiting Westminster College and Spalding University both spoiled the Owls' (1-6, 0-2) party.
The Blue Jays (4-7, 2-0) topped The W, 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-16), in the morning match. The Golden Eagles (4-6, 1-1) defeated MUW, 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 25-12), in the afternoon bout of the triangular event. Westminster went 2-0 on the day, Spalding was 1-1, and the Owls were 0-2.
Against WC, the MUW team did not have an answer to a blistering Blue Jays attack that yielded a .353 hitting percentage. WC also had eight service aces.
The W was led by
Amonie Silas' six kills, as well as three block assists.
Llayne Skinner added five kills and
Zoe Hansen four.
Skinner and libero
Madison Suggs each chipped in 10 digs to lead the backrow players.
Camryn Johnson had a team-best seven assists.
In the loss to Spalding, Silas had another strong effort with 11 kills and a .276 attack average. Silas also made four blocks, one solo and three assisted.
Skinner had seven kills to her credit. She also had 19 digs and a pair of serve aces.
Junior setter
Hannah Duran posted 14 assists and five digs. Suggs added six digs.
Next up for the Owls is a Friday (Sept. 29) bout at Blackburn College in Carlinville, Ill.
