COLUMBUS, Miss. – Junior guard
Conley Langford scored 22 points for her 21st-consecutive double-figure scoring game (dating back to the 2022-23 season), but it was not enough as the Mississippi University for Women fell prey to Lyon College, 74-62, in a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic (SLIAC) contest at Pohl Gym. The Owls fell to 5-9 (4-6 SLIAC), while the Scots improved to 10-7 (5-5 SLIAC).
While a loss-is-a-loss, this second meeting between the teams was a far cry from the first matchup on Lyon's home floor back on December 12, a 121-86 blowout victory for the Scots. In the rematch, The W managed to stay within striking distance of LC, trailing by just six at the half, 30-24. However, Lyon pushed its advantage to double figures early in the third quarter.
In the fourth period, a three-ball from MUW's
Claire Leak to open the stanza and a free throw from
Jas Patrick got the Owls to within seven, 51-44, with 9:04 still left to play. But in a span of just over five minutes, the Scots would go on a 15-2 run and reach their largest lead of the night - 20 points (66-46) - with 4:54 remaining.
The W was able to trim that somewhat in the waning minutes, but it proved to be too big of a mountain to climb, as the Owls lost their third-straight game.
Langford's big night not only extended her double-digit scoring skein, but it was her third-consecutive game with 20-plus points (and seventh this season). Langford also topped the Owls with nine rebounds – all on the defensive glass – and had two steals to her credit. She hit 8-of-16 field goals from the floor, including a 4-of-7 effort from beyond the arc.
Leak booked 13 points, draining 3-of-7 from long range. Leak also grabbed six caroms.
Zoe Essary chipped in seven points. The W's Moody twins – Leileigh and Aaliyah – each registered five points, with Aaliyah pulling down eight boards and dishing off a team-high five assists.
The difference in the game came down to Lyon capitalizing on the Owls' miscues. The 29 turnovers by The W was converted into 22 points by the Scots. Likewise, MUW managed just five total offensive rebounds and did not have any second-chance points, as a result.
The W will play its fourth-straight home game on Thursday (Jan. 25) when it hosts Principia College at 5:30 p.m. at Pohl Gym.
