Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Langford’s big night keys The W’s first women’s hoops win

SHREVFEPORT, La. - Senior Conley Langford's big game cued The W women's basketball team's first win of the 2024-25 season, 94-76, in a non-conference contest at Centenary College. The Owls (1-2) built a 52-38 halftime cushion and never look back versus the Ladies (1-2).

While it was a balanced team effort that got MUW the win – four players finished in double figures – it was a huge game by Langford that lit the fire. Langford finished the night with a game-leading 31 points and hit 10-of-19 from the floor. She was 4-for-8 from beyond the arc and connected on 7-of-8 free throws.

Calysia Phillips and Zia Shelds each contributed 18 points. Phillips also had five rebounds, four assists and five steals on her ledger.

Meanwhile, Shields came off of the Owls' bench to hit 7-of-10 from the floor. She hauled in four rebounds, as well.

Senior guard Claire Leak rounded out MUW's double-digit quartet by booking a double-double. Leak poured in 16 points, going 5-for-7 from the field and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. She corralled 10 rebounds and made a pair of steals, as well.

Centenary won the battle of the boards, 58-40. But the Owls force 28 turnovers by the Ladies, which The W converted into 28 of its points.

"It's always hard to win on the road," MUW Head Coach Eric Vaughn said. "We fought thru a lot of adversity with our bus breaking down and us not getting (to the hotel) until 4 a.m. this morning. But we found a way to win that first one. Prayerfully, we can build off of this one."

The win was also Vaughn's first as a college women's basketball head coach.

The W will have a week off until it opens St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next Tuesday (Nov. 26/1 p.m.) at home versus Lyon College.
