SAUGET, Ill. – Mississippi University for Women and Webster University combined for 43 runs and 55 hits in a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) doubleheader split at Grizzlies Ballpark. The Owls (10-7, 2-2 SLIAC) won the opener, 10-3, before the Gorloks (10-9, 3-1 SLIAC) dominated game two, 25-5.
In game one, The W built a 7-0 lead through four frames before Webster was even able to tally a run of its own.
Matthew Windham's (1-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) bases-loaded walk in the second started the scoring spree. In the second, MUW catcher
Avery Benson slammed an opposite-field, solo home run to left that made it 2-0. It was Benson's team-leading fifth time leaving the yard this season.
MUW added five more in the fourth, three unearned thanks to Gorlok miscues. One run came via an RBI double by Benson, who would finish his day 3-for-6 and with three RBI.
Baron Brack also went 3-for-6, driving in two runs, as well.
Landon Clark was 2-for-6 and blasted a solo homer to center in the eighth.
Zack Egan was 2-for-5 as the fourth Owl with a multi-hit game.
The W's second pitcher of the day,
Campbell McCluney (1-0) picked up the victory with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, after starter
Robby Canten failed to go the requisite five innings for a decision.
Connor Reilly threw the final 2.0 innings.
In game two, the Gorloks jumped on MUW starter
Chris Ellis (0-1) for eight earned runs in 1.2 innings. That led to a parade of five Owls' relievers to finish the seven inning, run-rule game.
The W amassed 14 hits in the losing effort. Senior
Austin Telano was 2-for-3, both doubles.
Johnny Setchfield's (2-3) two-run homer in the second inning made it 3-2 at the time. He also had an RBI single in the fifth.
Tyler Estabrook went 2-for-4 and
Baker Watson was 2-for-3, giving MUW a quartet of players with multiple hits.
The W will play its first-ever SLIAC home games on Saturday (March 30/1 p.m.), hosting Blackburn College in a doubleheader at Columbus Christian Academy.
