MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Mississippi University for Women baseball completed a three-game sweep of Greenville University by virtue of its 11-3 Saturday win at the USA Stadium Complex. Although considered a non-conference game – The W swept the league doubleheader on Friday – the Owls (18-8) extended their current win skein to six games after knocking off the Panthers (11-21) for the third time.
With the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) games out of the way yesterday, both teams turned Saturday's contest into a bullpen & bench game, when all was said-and-done. Greenville used 14 position players and seven pitchers. MUW played 13 in the field and deployed another five to the mound.
By declaring the multiple pitchers ahead of time, MUW starter
Chris Ellis (1-1) was able to pick up his first victory of the season. Ellis went 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit and an unearned run.
At the plate, shortstop
Tyler Estabrook had a huge day for The W. Estabrook went 3-for-4, with a double and his first home run of 2024. He scored twice and drove in three runs.
Senior teammate
Austin Telano also went 3-for-4 at the plate – all doubles - driving in two and scoring twice.. The only other Owl with multiple hits was
Baron Brack, posting a 2-for-5 day and scoring twice.
Griffin Fuller, who came off the bench, went 1-1 with a triple as MUW's only other extra-base knock out of the team's 14 total hits (GU had just seven total hits).
The result was never much in doubt after the third frame. Greenville scored first in its half of the second, only to see The W plate two in the home half of the inning. MUW would add two in the third and a big five runs in the fourth to blow the game open, 9-2.
MUW, which sits alone in second place in the SLIAC with an 8-2 record, will next play a key doubleheader on Tuesday (April 16) at league-leader Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky. The Golden Eagles are a perfect 8-0 in the SLIAC.
