GREENVILLE, Ill. - Mississippi University for Women women's track & field continued to confound the pollsters, earning a second-place finish at the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) 2024 outdoor championships. The Owls amassed 87 points, well behind perennial champ Greenville University's 335 points.
The W medaled in six events and produced MUW's first-ever SLIAC outdoor champions. Freshman
Hannah Owens won the grueling 10,000-meter run in a school-record time of 43:15.00 minutes. Owens then came back to earn silver in the 5,000-meter run (22:15.72). Owens also got The W a point in the 1500 meters, placing eighth (5:45.86). Teammate
Kalee Sanders got the team some extra points by finishing sixth in the 10K.
Another freshman,
Ty'Kerria Young, earned gold in the 100-meter hurdles. Young won the event in an Owls' school-record clocking of 15.84 seconds (bettering her own mark set last week). She also earned points for MUW with a 6th in the 100-meter dash (12.84), 5th in the triple jump (10.85m), and 5th in the long jump (5.25m), where she bettered her own school record.
Junior
Michaiah Adams was the silver medalist in the 100 meters (12.40 seconds). Adams was seventh in the 200, as well.
Vonisha Towns was fourth in the 200 meters, posting a school-record time of 25.65 seconds. Towns also placed sixth in the 400-meter run (1:01.96).
MUW picked up silver in the 4x100-meter relay and turned in a school-record time of 49.63 seconds. The group was comprised of Young, Adams,
Paris Flanery, and Towns.
The 4x400-meter relay quartet – of Towns, Adams, Flanery, and Sanders – brought home a third place medal.
Freshman thrower
Arie'Onna McCollum brought home points – and established school records – in her four events. Her record effort came in her 5th place in the discus (32.52m), in her 6th place the shot put (10.12m), a 6th in the javelin (29.56m), and a 7th in the hammer toss (35.78m).
Sanders was also honored on the SLIAC's All-Sportsmanship team.
