Owls upset in SLIAC baseball tourney, 7-5

FULTON, Mo. – The No. 3-seeded Mississippi University for Women baseball team was upset by No. 6 seed Westminster College, 7-5, on Tuesday in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) tournament quarterfinals. The loss ends the Owls' season at 22-15, while the Blue Jays (16-23) advance to the SLIAC semifinals.

After WC tallied a run in its half of the first, the Owls – who were "home" on the scoreboard as the higher seed – plated a pair of runs in their half of the inning. Baron Brack and Landon Clark (1-4) each had RBI singles that made it 2-1 in favor of The W.

After the Jays added a pair of runs in the second to make it 4-3, MUW went right back in front in the third. A two-run single by Zack Egan drove home Austin Telano and Clark with the go-ahead run.

Down again, 5-4, in the seventh, and with runners on the corners, The W once again scored the equalizing run. Tyler Estabrook was on third base when a Westminster wild pitch allowed him to scurry home to make it 5-5.

But the Blue Jays would get to MUW's relievers for a pair of runs in the ninth. And the Owls were unable to respond in the home half of the ninth, dropping the curtain on an otherwise successful 2024 campaign by The W.

Egan led the MUW batters by going 3-for-4. Matthew Windham (2-4) and Brack (2-4) also had multi-hit games for The W, each scoring a run, as well.

Starter Tyler Temple gave up an uncharacteristic 10 hits and five earned runs, exiting after 3.1 innings and not figuring in the decision. Chris Ellis, the second of four Owls' pitchers, followed Temple with 3.0 scoreless innings of relief. Connor Reilly (0-2) came on in the seventh and eventually gave up a run in the ninth to take the loss. Jackson Gantt allowed one hit and an unearned run in the ninth, as well.

The Owls' 22 victories is a school record for most in the regular season. It is also the second-most wins, overall, in program history.
