Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

The W women’s soccer notches first win in comeback style

DECATUR, Ga. -  After being close several times early in the 2024 season, The W women's soccer team finally was able to book victory No. 1 with its 2-1 come-from-behind win at Agnes Scott College. The Owls are now 1-2-1 overall, while the Scotties fell to 0-3-0.

It also marked the first collegiate coaching victory for MUW Head Coach Ana Ramos. But for Ramos, who has had her Owls on the cusp of that elusive first win before, getting over the proverbial hump was a testament to the players' work ethic.

"The team had a great week of training that translated over to the game seamlessly," Ramos explained. "We had two great team goals and a few more good opportunities. It was a fun game to coach as the team really found their footing tonight and every member played for their teammates next to them."

If you just looked at the stat lines, you might think that The W blew the doors off ASC. But, as often happens in soccer, statistics can be deceiving. MUW out shot the Scotties by a 25-to-4 margin, managing to put 14 attempts on goal (compared to just two by ASC).

The Owls were out-shooting Agnes Scott by a 14-3 difference in the first half, alone, yet were staring at the wrong end of a 1-0 score at the intermission.

Fortunately for the Owls, the second half also brought more chances and a pair of goals. In the 51st minute, sophomore Kimi Norway scored what was not only the equalizing goal, but also the first for the MUW team this season in its four matches.

After the two teams countered each other the bulk of the second stanza, The W netted what would be the match-winning goal off the foot of Kate Blankenship with just 3:30 minutes left to play.

Kiersten Taylor assisted on both of the Owls' goals.

Blankenship was responsible for 10 of MUW's total shots. Taylor took five tries and Norway four.

The W will next be in action on Tuesday (Sept. 17/5 p.m.), as it travels to regional-rival Belhaven University for another non-league bout in Jackson.
