MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The W baseball stumbled in the opener of its three-game series at Huntingdon College, falling by an 8-0 score. The Owls fell to 0-2 on the young season, while the Hawks improved to 1-3.
MUW collected seven hits for the game, but could not string a rally together. The Owls had no extra-base knocks among their hits, either. The Hawks struck out 13 MUW batters and did not walk any in the combined shutout.
MUW also did itself no favors by committing five errors in the contest. That led to three unearned runs by the Hawks.
The Owls found themselves down 1-0 after the first inning, before the host HC squad erupted for four in the second innings. Huntingdon added single runs in the fourth, seventh, and eighth frames, as well.
Robby Canten (0-2) took the loss for The W. Canten went 5.0 innings, allowed eight hits and six runs (three earned).
Loren Cox tossed the final three innings, allowing two earned runs and two hits, while striking out three Hawks.
Baron Brack and
Zack Egan both had multi-hit games. Brack was 2-for-4, while Egan finished 2-for-3.
Matthew Windham (14),
Zach Johnson (1-4), and
Johnny Setchfield (1-3) accounted for the other MUW hits.
The same two teams are slated to square off in a Saturday (Feb. 15) doubleheader, with first pitch at 1 p.m. in Montgomery.
