COLUMBUS, Miss. – With its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) post-season position already locked in at the No. 4 seed, The W men's basketball got into a donnybrook with high-scoring league co-leader Greenville University, 127-102, at Pohl Gym. The Owls fell to 12-12 overall (9-8 SLIAC) after being beaten by the run-and-gun Panthers, who improved to 17-17 (15-2 SLIAC).
With patrons at times having to check their ticket stubs to make certain they weren't at a track meet instead, MUW breached the century mark for the first time this season in the setback.
Sophomore forward
James Dukes had a huge game for The W, setting a school record for most field goals made in a game by going 15-for-21 from the field on his way to a 32-point night. Most of Dukes' tallies came in the paint and many on picturesque dunks after MUW broke the Greenville press. The Booneville, Miss., native notched his third double-double of the season by also hauling in 11 rebounds.
In all, 80 of MUW's 102 points came in the paint. Conversely, the Panthers hoisted 54 three-point tries and converted 18.
Fifth-year senior
Dariun Doss hit 4-of-7 from the field on his way to 11 points, along with a pair of blocks.
Trent Walker and
Tyson Smithey each chipped in 10 points, with Smithey also registering a double-double by snaring 11 boards.
Cam Smith and
Jackson Reid each contributed eight points.
Chris Evans booked seven points and a game-leading six assists.
MUW was victimized by its own mistakes by making 35 turnovers, 15 of which were unforced errors. The Panthers converted the Owls' turnovers into 49 of their points.
The W will cap the regular season at home on Saturday (Feb. 22/3 p.m.) by hosting Spalding University at Pohl Gym.
