ELSAH, Ill. - Another game, another last-second hero for The W men's basketball, as
Jackson Reid's bucket with six seconds remaining lifted The W men's basketball to a 73-72, come-from-behind St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) win at Principia College. The victory also mathematically assured the Owls (11-10, 8-6 SLIAC) of one of the six berths in the league's post-season tournament.
Currently, MUW sits in the No. 4 position, two games out of the third slot and two games ahead of the five spot. The Owls have four SLIAC games remaining in the regular season to improve their position.
Saturday's hard-fought win on the road was the fourth time this season that The W has pulled out a victory on its last possession of the game. And Reid is the third different player to lift the Owls (joining teammates
Dariun Doss versus Blackburn, as well as
Eric Bass Jr. against both Westminster and Webster).
The W trailed the Panthers, 72-71, with 13 seconds left. Principia had possession and attacked the front court. But the Owls trapping defense forced a turnover, as Reid swiped the ball and sprinted for an uncontested layup with six seconds left to play.
The host Panthers were able to get off a desperation layup try, which missed. The rebound was corralled by
Isaiah Ball as time expired to seal the win for MUW.
Trent Walker led a trio of double-figure scorers for The W with 15 points. Walker also hauled in even rebounds, all of the defensive variety.
Doss contributed 12 points and a team-best eight rebounds. He was 6-of-12 from the field.
Reid's 11 points rounded out MUW's top scorers. Reid chipped in three rebounds, a team-leading three assists, and a pair of steals.
Five other players –
Chris Evans,
James Dukes, Bass Jr.,
Cam Smith and
Josh Dukes – had six points, apiece, in a balanced Owls' offense. Ball's five points rounded out The W's offense.
James Dukes also managed six rebounds on his ledger.
MUW did a good job taking care of the basketball, committing just nine turnovers. It marked the fourth time this season that the Owls have been in single digit turnover totals in a contest.
The W will play the third of four-straight road games next Thursday (Feb. 13/7:30 p.m.) at Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois.
