MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The W softball matched a school single game record for walks received in its 7-0 shutout over Vermont State University-Castleton in its second game of the day on its spring trip. The Owls (10-6) dropped their first contest on Thursday to Dickinson College.
Versus VSU-C, MUW worked Spartan pitchers for 12 walks in the game (matching the dozen they received versus Rust College on March 31, 2018), including five-consecutive bases on balls in their four-run fifth frame.
The W also tallied three runs in the fourth.
Four-hole hitter
Maiya Joe tied the Owls' individual record for most free passes in a game, by walking all four of her plate appearances. She scored twice.
Three other Owls –
Kaitlyn Bearley,
Brooklyn Wood, and
Chloe McClain – all went 1-for-2 from the plate and drew two walks, apiece. McClain had three runs batted in and Wood added one RBI.
In all, MUW had four hits, with starting pitcher
Brooklyn Rhodes (1-3, 2 runs) getting the other hit.
In the circle, the freshman Rhodes improved her personal record to 4-0 for 2025, with her first collegiate shutout. She struck out six Spartans and did not walk a batter, facing just three above the minimum and lowering her season earned run average to a miniscule 0.88.
In the day's opener versus Dickinson (6-3), The W trailed 1-0 after the first inning, but briefly took the lead in the top of the third on a two-run double from
Emilee Slade (2-3).
But the Red Devils pushed across the tying run in the bottom of the third. In the sixth, MUW starter
Rylie Grisham (2-3) was touched up for a double and two singles before
Avery Byerley came on to record the final three outs, but not before DC had added two runs for the 4-2 final.
Lilly Harrison (1-2) had the Owls' only other hit of the game.
