Owls drop two in Myrtle Beach finale

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The W softball suffered a pair of losses on the final day of its spring trip on Friday. The Owls (1-0-8) fell to Penn College, 4-0, and lost to Penn State University-Altoona, 11-1, to cap the six-game swing.

In the opener, the MUW offense was led by Anna Sandlin, who had two of the team's three hits in the game. Sandlin was 2-for-2 in the game and was also hit by a pitch. She collected the Owls' first hit of the day in the fifth inning on a bloop single to right, taking second on a fielding error.

Lilly Harrison (1-2) had MUW's other hit.

Phallyn Clark (3-2) took the loss in the circle. Clark went 3.0 innings, permitting seven hits and four runs, only one of which was earned thanks to two Owls' errors.

Brooklyn Rhodes tossed 4.0 innings of two-hit, scoreless relief, to close the game.

Versus PSU-Altoona, The W trailed 3-0 after a half-inning and never recovered. The Lions out-hit the Owls, 12-6, for the afternoon.

Sandlin kept her hot bat going in game two of the day, with a 3-for-3 game at the plate. Sandlin drove in the Owls' lone run, as well.

Rhodes, serving as the designated player in game two, was 2-for-2 with a double.

Leadoff batted Emilee Slade was 1-for-3, with a fifth inning triple and scored the Owls' lone run in that frame.

The MUW pitchers had a tough afternoon in game two, as starter Baylee McWilliams lasted 2.2 innings. She was charged with six hits and six earned runs.  Reliever Avery Byerley did not fare much better versus the potent PSU-A bats, allowing six hits, as well, along with five runs (four earned).

The W will have a two-week respite before opening St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on March 28 at home versus Lyon College.
