MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For the second time in a week, The W baseball travelled to Rhodes College for a non-conference midweek game and, for the second time, suffered a loss at the hands of the team that received votes in both national NCAA Division III polls. This time the Owls (15-14) fell by a 10-5 score to the Lynx (23-13).
RC took the early lead with an unearned run in the second against the Owls. But in the top of the third, MUW got even on
Matthew Windham's RBI single that plate
Tyler Estabrook (1-2).
Landon Clark then followed with his fourth home run of the season to give his team a 3-1 lead.
But from that juncture, the Lynx pushed across nine unanswered runs over the next four frames to lead 10-3 through seven innings.
The W added a pair of runs in the ninth. Clark lifted a sacrifice fly with Estabrook tagging up and scoring.
Avery Benson's RBI single brought home
Swayze Rikard for the 10-5 final score.
Clark - batting second in the MUW lineup - went 2-for-4 with the three runs driven in, raising his batting average to a team-leading .410. Clark extended his hitting streak to six-consecutive games, with multi-hit efforts in five of those.
Windham also went 2-for-4, with a run, RBI, and a walk from the Owls' leadoff slot. Six of The W's seven hits came from the top of the order, as No. 3 hitter
Zach Johnson was 1-for-5 and No. 4 batter Benson finishing the game 1-for-4.
The Owls did coax eight walks from the Lynx's pitchers.
Baron Brack drew three of the free passes.
In what was a bullpen game for both teams – MUW used six pitchers and Rhodes five – the Owls also proved charitable with 13 walks issued of their own. The W staff did pick up six strikeouts.
Loren Cox (0-2) was MUW's third man in and took the loss with 1.1 innings of work.
Th W will resume SLIAC play on Saturday (April 26), with 12 p.m. doubleheader at Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas.
