JACKSON, Miss. – The W baseball took down Millsaps College – the Southern Athletic Association regular season champion – by a score of 13-8 at Twenty Field. While it was a midweek, non-league bullpen game for both teams, the win by the Owls (18-14) over the Majors (28-11) kept the momentum going heading into Saturday's all-important regular season SLIAC finale at home versus Westminster at CCA Field.
Junior first baseman
Zach Johnson continues to string together a memorable first season with MUW. Versus Millsaps, Johnson was a double shy of the program's first-ever cycle. As it turned out, Johnson actually had a couple of bases too many for the cycle. Johnson, hitting third in the order, was 4-for-6, with a single, triple, and two home runs. Johnson finished with 4 runs batted in and 4 runs scored.
No. 4-hole batter
Avery Benson had a huge game, as well. Benson, a senior catcher, went 3-for-5 and slugged his fifth homer of the season. Benson drove in four runs.
Tyler Estabrook was the third Owl with a multi-hit game versus the Majors. Estabrook was 2-for-4, with a double and two runs scored.
Landon Clark finished the game 1-for-3 with three walks. Clark had a pair of RBI and scored on all three of his bases on balls.
Jackson Gantt (1-0), the fourth of MUW's six pitchers utilized, got the victory with 2.0 scoreless innings. MC employed 10 hurlers in the game, as well.
In addition to the momentum gained going into Saturday's doubleheader with Westminster – where the Owls will just need to win one of the two games to lock down the No 2 seed and a SLIAC first-round bye – MUW is in position to reach the coveted 20-win plateau for the second-consecutive season. That would be quite the turnaround after starting the 2025 campaign with five-straight losses and a 1-7 record, before reversing course.
