“Zach Attack” helps Owls sweep doubleheader at Greenville

GREENVILLE, Ill. – Junior outfielder Zach Johnson (Birmingham, Alabama) had a big afternoon in both ends of The W baseball's St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) road doubleheader sweep of Greenville University on Thursday. The Owls (9-11, 6-2 SLIAC) topped the Panthers (8-18, 2-4 SLIAC) by scores of 10-5 and 4-2.

Johnson drove in half of MUW's runs in each half of the twinbill. In game one, Johnson went 2-for-5 with 5 run batted in. He had a double and scored a run, as well.

In game two, Johnson was just a single shy of completing the first-ever cycle in Owls' baseball history. Johnson finished 3-for-4, with two RBI. He laced an RBI triple in the first inning, smacked a leadoff home run on the first pitch of the fourth frame, and had a two-out double in the eighth. Johnson was retired in the sixth on a grounder to first, with the pitcher covering to record the out.

In the opener, Greenville actually held a 4-2 lead through the fourth inning. But in the top of the fifth The W would wrest the lead for good. Johnson's two-run double knotted the game at 4-4, before an Avery Benson single plated Johnson with the go-ahead run.

Benson would scored on a wild pitch to give the Owls a 6-4 lead when the fifth-inning dust had settled.

A two-run single by Johnson in the sixth made it 8-4. Freshman Swayze Rikard slapped an RBI single in the seventh and was at the plate when a wild pitch allowed Benson to trot home with the tenth run of the game.

Zack Egan also had a nice game, going 3-for-5. Tyler Estabrook and Johnny Setchfield each went 2-for-5. Estabrook scored twice, while Setchfield scored a run and drove in another.

Reliever Campbell McCluney (2-0) earned the win with 5.2 innings of five-hit relief. McCluney permitted one earned run during his stint, struck out two, and walked two.

MUW starter Robby Canten was chased after allowing four runs and seven hits over his 3.1 innings of work.

In game two, Matthew Windham (2-4, 2 runs) led off with a double and, with two out, came home on Johnson's triple. Johnson also came home in the first after a throwing error on a Benson (0-1, 3BB) grounder to second made it 2-0.

After the Panthers leveled the game at 2-2 in the third, it was time for more Johnson heroics with the leadoff homer in the fourth, which proved to be the game-winning RBI.

Meanwhile, Connor Reilly was summoned to the mound in the fifth, after starter Chris Ellis allowed his sixth hit of the game. Reilley was stellar, giving his team 5.0 innings of scoreless relief and scattering three hits to close out the game. The win was Reilly's (1-0) first decision of the 2025 season.

Landon Clark's (1-3) sacrifice fly in the eighth gave The W some insurance and Reilly a little breathing room for the final two innings.

Johnson's line for the day was 5-for-9, with 4 extra-base hits and 7 RBI. He scored three runs, as well.

The W will next host SLIAC-leader Spalding University for a doubleheader on Tuesday (April 8/12 p.m.) at CCA Field.
