RIDGELAND, Miss. - The W rode its German import,
Simon Roth, to the team's first win of the season, 5-3, in a non-league bout at Tougaloo College. The win by the Owls (1-13-1) was also the first collegiate coaching victory for MUW head coach
Stewart Mena.
Roth, a freshman from Bavaria, Germany, tallied twice in a two-minute span in a wild second half, to provide the difference.
MUW's
Luis Correa opened the match's scoring in the 30th minute of play. That 1-0 score held until halftime and, when the second stanza started,
Sebastian Araya made it 2-0 in the 55th minute, with Correa gaining the assist, as well.
As the contest crept into the 79th minute, that's when 12 minutes of chaos ensued down the stretch.
At the 78:15 mark, Roth blasted in a goal off of a free kick from 35 yards away, upping The W's advantage to a seemingly-secure 3-0. But just 47 seconds after the restart, Tougaloo tallied to cut the deficit to 3-1.
A little over a minute later, Roth netted what would prove to be the deciding goal, unassisted, at 80:09. That put the visiting Owls up, 4-1. But somehow nothing felt safe in the frenetic second half.
The Bulldogs' Helix Owusu had a pair of goals for his team in the final six minutes of play. Helix's goals at 84:01 and 88:54, sandwiched an MUW insurance goal by
Jordan Ware at 88:16, for the final 5-3 score.
Preston Holmes assisted on Ware's second goal of 2026.
MUW starting goalkeeper
Will Rickman had three saves and permitted one goal in 79:02 minutes.
Kenneth Starr had two saves and was charged with two goals in the final 10:58 minutes.
Roth currently leads MUW with six goals in 2026, after Tuesday's performance.
