LaGRANGE, Ga. – The W women's tennis picked up its first win of the 2025-26 season, scoring a 4-3 road win at LaGrange College on Friday morning. The Owls are now 1-2, overall.
MUW began the contest by winning the doubles point. With just five players making the trip, the shorthanded Owls had to win both of the contested pairs matches, which they did, to gain the team point. At first doubles, the tandem of
Austin Hays and
Bailey Flynn took a hard-fought decision, 7-6. That was followed by a more comfortable victory at No. 2 doubles from The W duo of
Kayleigh Griffin and
Alaina Mathis.
With the Owls forfeiting No. 6 singles, the two teams entered individual matches tied at 1-1 and playing, in essence, a best-three-out-of-five series for the team win. At No. 3 singles, Flynn split sets, winning 6-3 and then losing 6-2, before taking the 10-4 proset in the third. But the Panthers next won at first singles in three sets, knotting the match at 2-2.
At No. 4 singles,
Alaina Mathis improved to 3-0 on the year with a dominating straight-set win, 6-2, 6-1, to propel the Owls in front once more. But again, LaGrange battled back with another three-set marathon at second singles, making it 3-3.
That left the match result hanging on the result of No. 5 singles, where Owls' freshman
Harley Lowry was facing Panthers' senior Abby Fuller. Lowry, a Caledonia High School product, Cruised to a 6-3 win in the first set, but then lost a tough 7-6 (7-3 tiebreaker) second set. In the deciding third set, Lowry brushed off Fuller with a 10-5 win to give MUW the match.
