JACKSON, Miss. – The W men's tennis remained perfect in the spring portion of its season, with a 4-2 win at Belhaven University. The Owls are now 3-2, overall, after defeating the Blazers for the first time in program history, after going 0-6 since the 2018-19 season.
MUW dominated doubles to open the day, earning the team's first point. At No. 1 singles, it was
Jorge Ortiz and
Sandro Giangregorio winning, 6-1.
Juan Garcia and
Marcos Fernandez took second doubles, 6-2, while
Alvaro Bardales and
Josh Cooper also won, 6-2, at No. 3 doubles.
The Blazers won the Nos 1 and 2 singles matches, but that would be it for the host team. Down 3-2, The W reeled off straight-set wins at No. 3,4, and 5 singles (with No. 6 singles unfinished, with the match decided).
Giangregorio, playing No. 3 singles, won by a decisive 6-1, 6-2 tally. Fernandez followed suit at No. 4, 6-3, 6-3.
Ahead by a 3-2 score, Bardales clinched the team win at fifth singles, 6-3, 6-1.
