COLUMBUS, Miss. – After a tough stretch that saw it lose five-straight St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) games, The W women's basketball righted the ship with a dominating, 91-62, win over Eureka College at Pohl Gym. The victory also kept the Owls' (5-15, 4-8 SLIAC) SLIAC post-season hopes alive.
With four league games left, MUW trails Greenville University by one game for the sixth – and final – spot in the SLIAC tournament.
And the Owls' dynamic duo of seniors
Mia Bowen and
Conley Langford came up big versus the Red Devils on Saturday afternoon. Each finished the day with a double-double game, as MUW led from wire-to-wire.
Bowen poured in 28 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. She shot 13-for-19 from the floor, with one three-pointer, and was 1-of-1 from the free throw line. It was Bowen's 10th double-double of the season and 19th game (out of 20) with double-digit scoring, and her eight with 20-plus points.
Langford added to her on-going school record for career double-double – now at 23 - by tallying 14 points and snagging 11 rebounds, as well. Langford only converted two field goals, instead making her mark by going 9-for-10 from the charity stripe.
Freshman guard, and former New Hope High School product,
Jakayla Smith finished with 16 points, going 6-of-11 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the line. It was Smith's third double-figure game in the past four outings. Smith, at a diminutive 5-foot-2 inches, managed to snag nine rebounds among thr taller traffic.
Calysia Phillips,
Rhianna Dinkins, and
Charity Hinton each contributed eight points in MUW's balanced attack. Phillips led all players with five assists, while teammate
Fantasia Wilson made five steals.
The W will next play at Principia College on Saturday, February 14 (1 p.m.), in Elsah, Illinois.
