BOSSIER CITY, La. – The W golf teams both place third at Centenary College/Hal Sutton Invitational, held Monday and Tuesday (March 16-17) on the par-72 Golf Club at Stonebridge. The Owls' ladies finished behind Mississippi College and Jackson College out of the seven female teams. On the men's side, MUW placed behind Hendrix College and Jackson College in the 11-team field and where just four strokes separated the top three teams.
Braving the wet and frigid temperatures, no teams or individuals finished in red numbers for the tournament.
In the women's competition, The W was led by junior
Ashley Estabrook in 15th place. Estabrook carded rounds of 85-89=174 for her 36 holes.
MUW's next three scoring golfers all found themselves grouped in a tie at 16th place with aggregate scores of 175. The trio included senior
Sara Grace Ramey (88-87), junior Isabel Velasquez (91-84), and junior
Addi Campbell (88-87).
Lindsey Reimsnyder (92-92=184) rounded out The W's participants in 25th place.
The MUW men found themselves in a heated battle at the top of the leaderboard, where to three teams on top were within seven strokes each other the vast majority of the tourney. The Owls actually had the best team score of the top trio on day two, but could not entirely erase their first-day deficit.
With round two's improved weather, it became "moving day" for the field. And no one took advantage of it like Owls' newcomer
Alexandre Thery. Thery started his second round in a tie for 10th place after his first round 79. But Tuesday's slightly improved track allowed him to shoot the third-lowest round of the tournament, with a 2-under-par 70 (and one of just four rounds in red numbers for the entire tournament) that vaulted him all the way up to fourth place in the final standings, with a composite 149 score.
Junior teammate
Collin Jones (Lake Charles, La.), returning to his home state, was close behind in fifth place at 150. Jones share the overnight lead after Monday's opening round, with his 1-over 73, but slipped in the standings after a round two 77.
Junior - and fellow Cajun -
Bryce Denley (Mandeville, La.) was tied for 17th (80-76=156). Junior
Nicklaus Ledbetter (85-76=161) tied for 32nd place and senior
Daniel Martin (91-83=174) was 48th.
Freshman
Trace Novak (84-83=167), senior
Cameron James (87-84=171), and junior
Narit Teeranontamongkol (87-88=175) – all playing as individuals – placed tied for 42nd, 46th, and tied for 49th, respectively.
