COLUMBUS, Miss. – For the first time in its men's tennis history, The W played host to a conference match on its Garrett Courts and came away with a resounding 6-1 win over Principia College. The Owls Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) South Division win helped the team improve to 6-5 overall (1-0 UMAC), while the Panthers fell to 2-7 (0-1 UMAC).
MUW set the tone for the match by dominating doubles and winning all three bouts to pick up the team point for pairs play. The No. 3 team of
Josh Cooper and
Alvaro Bardales was first off the court with a 6-0 win, followed by No. 1 partners
Jorge Ortiz and Sandro Gangregorio with their 6-2 win. Second doubles was won by
Juan Garcia and
Marcos Fernandez, 6-3.
Singles was an equally impressive display by The W, taking five of the six contests and all in straight sets. Bardales, at No. 6 singles, was first off the courts with a 6-0, 6-0 win and gave him a shutout of his foes at both doubles and singles.
Next to finish was Garcia at fourth singles (6-0, 6-1) and Fernandez at fifth singles (6-1, 6-0), to make the team score 4-0 and clinch the win early for MUW. The Panthers picked up their lone win at second singles.
Ortiz powered to a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. That was followed by Giangregorio's 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles to close out the memorable day for The W men's tennis.
