COLUMBUS, Miss. – The W tennis teams got a mixed result this weekend for its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) South Division matches, as both teams lost at UMAC South favorite Greenville University on Friday and rebounded to both defeat Webster University on Saturday morning.
The MUW women are now 4-8 overall and 1-2 in the UMAC South. He Owl men improved to 7-6 on the year and 2-1 in the UMAC South.
Versus Greenville, the MUW women were shutout, 7-0, as the Panthers won all six singles contests in straight sets. In doubles, the Owls' No. 3 duo of
Emma Horton and
Brooklyn Ward dropped a tough 7-5 decision.
On the men's side, things proved to be considerably tighter in a 5-2 loss for The W. The Panthers swept all three highly-contested doubles contests to earn the first team point. In singles play, three of the six matches split sets, with two going to GU. The W wins came at fifth singles, where
Marcos Fernandez won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, and at sixth singles, as
Alvaro Bardales lost the first set, 7-5, won the second, 6-4, and then won the pro-set third, 10-7.
On Saturday in St. Louis, the Owls took care of business, with the women and men both cruising to wins, 6-1 and 7-0, respectively, over Webster University.
The MUW ladies took all three doubles matches to garner the first team point over the Gorloks. The pairs for the Owls included
Bailey Flynn and
Alaina Mathis at No. 1, where they won 7-5, and
Kayleigh Griffin and
Austin Hays at No. 2, with a dominant 6-0 effort. Horton and
Harley Lowry eared a forfeit win at No. 3 pairs.
MUW won the Nos. 2-6 singles matches. Griffin (6-3, 6-4), Flynn (6-0, 6-2) and Mathis (6-0, 6-0), all won in straight sets at Nos. 2, 3, and 4. Horton and Lowry accepted forfeits at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.
The MUW men began their run against Webster with wins in all three doubles bouts, for the early 1-0 advantage. At No. 1,
Jorge Ortiz Catala and
Sandro Giangregorio fought to a 7-6 (7-5) win, followed by
Juan Garcia and Fernandez (6-4) at No. 2, and
Josh Cooper and Bardales (6-0) at No. 3.
Ortiz Catala and Cooper had the hardest singles matches at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Ortiz Catala worked for a straight-set, 7-5, 7-5 victory. Cooper split sets, winning the opener, 6-4, dropping the second set, 6-1, and bouncing back to take set three, 6-1.
The W won the last four singles matches in convincing fashion in straight sets. The wins, in ordr, came from Giangregorio (6-1, 6-4), Garcia (6-1, 7-5), Fernandez (6-3, 6-1) and
Ian Costabel (6-2, 6-0).
