JACKSON, Miss. – The W baseball won its second game in a row on a neutral site field, defeating Alma College (Mich.), 8-5, in 10 innings at Millsaps College's Twenty Field. The win helped the Owls (5-5) climb back to the .500 level, while the Scots fell to 4-1-1.
MUW opened the scoring in the top of the first, thanks to a
Baron Brack (3-6) single that drove home
Jay Marbutt (3-5). But Alma responded took the lead with two runs in its half of the first, 2-1.
In the fourth, the Owl got a run on a throwing error and another as
Jack Sledge (2-5) hammered an RBI single to make it 4-2. Still up 4-3 through six,
Bryson Barnes' (1-4) sacrifice fly in the seventh made it 5-3.
That score stood until the bottom of the ninth. MUW's second pitcher of the day,
Robby Canten was cruising into his sixth inning of relief when the Scots got to him for a pair of runs, before
Will Carter closed out the inning and the contest went into the 10th, tied 5-5.
The W would take the lead on an unearned run, following a fielding error and an errant pickoff attempt that allowed
Michael O'Neil to come home, 6-5. Then, with two in the inning and a man on second, senior right-fielder
Zach Johnson (3-5, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) crushed a 1-1 pitch to right-center for a two-run home run that made it 8-5.
It was Johnson's third homer in as many games for the Owls.
All that remained was for Carter to come on and pitch a scoreless 10th frame to seal the win, improving his personal record to 3-0 on the year. In his 1.1 innings versus Alma, Carter allowed two hits, zero runs, struck out two, and did not walk a batter.
