Softball drops series finale at Millsaps, 8-4

JACKSON, Miss. – The W softball lost its final game of the three-game set at Millsaps College, 8-4 on Sunday. The Owls (4-5) were swept by the Majors (7-2) in the weekend bouts.

MUW looked as though it might salvage the final game, after dropping Saturday's doubleheader. The W posted a run in the first on a sacrifice squeeze by Addison Owen that plated Gillion Eaves from third. After Millsaps tied it in their half of the first, MUW starting pitcher Brooklyn Rhodes helped her own cause with an RBI double in the fifth to put her team on top, 2-1.

But things got rocky for Rhodes (2-3) in the bottom of the sixth, as she failed to get an out. The sophomore hit the Majors' leadoff batter, issued a walk, followed by a single to load the bases, and then a grand slam home run that flipped the scoreboard. Rhodes gave up another single, before being replaced by Phallyn Clark, who didn't fare much better versus the hot MC bats, as the hosts had a seven-run inning when the dust had settled.

Despite her struggles in the circle, Rhodes topped the Owls' offense by going 3-for-4 at the plate, with a double, a run scored, and the one run batted in.

Owen (2-3) and Avery Johnston (2-4) both had multi-hit games, as well. Madison York (1-3) and Kaitlyn Bearley (1-4) each had a double.

The W will next host Millsaps in a doubleheader on Saturday (March 7/12 p.m.) in Columbus.
