COLUMBUS, Miss. – The W softball a non-conference home doubleheader to Millsaps College on Saturday, falling by scores of 5-2 and 7-3. The W is now 4-7 on the year.
MUW will likely be glad not to see the Majors (7-2) anymore during the 2026 regular season. The W began the year with a respectable 4-2 record, but since has lost five-consecutive-games – all to Millsaps – as the teams played a back-to-back, home-and-home series' (three in Jackson last weekend and the two in Columbus).-
Game one saw the Owls take the lead late, only to be thwarted by a Majors' seventh-inning comeback. MUW trailed 1-0 heading into the home half of the sixth, when the top of the lineup ignited a two-run rally, thanks to four-consecutive singles by
Gillion Eaves (1-3),
Madison York (1-4),
Addison Owen (2-3), and
Brooklyn Rhodes (2-3), the last of which resulted in an RBI. A bases-loaded walk to
Kaylee Crawford (1-1) put MUW on top, 2-1, heading into the final frame.
But it was a nightmare seventh for The W, committing four errors that led to four unearned runs charged to pitcher
Trinity Garvin (0-1). Garvin, who had a solid effort in the complete game loss, was the unfortunate benefactor of the Owls' miscues, as all five runs charged to her in the game were unearned because of the team's five total errors in the opener.
The second game of the day saw Millsaps build up a 7-0 lead after five innings, before MUW found its stride with a three-run sixth. A walk to York and a single by Owen (2-3) set the stage for an RBI double from Rhodes. That was followed by a ground-out RBI by
MC Brown. Garvin would reach on a walk and eventually score, after a pair of fielder's choices and a throwing error by the Majors, for the 7-3 final.
Owen (0-1) took the game two loss in the circle after being touched up for five runs (four earned) in 1.1 innings of work. Rhodes threw 3.2 innings of relief and had four strikeouts, with
Rachel Etheridge giving her team 2.0 frames of scoreless relief.
