STEENS, Miss. – The W baseball feted its 15 upper classmen in its annual Senior Day festivities, but it was junior
Chase Marshall who delivered the fireworks with a walk-off single in the 10th inning to give his team – and teammates – the 4-3 win over Greenville University in a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) game. The Owls (22-17, 16-8 SLIAC) took their fifth SLIAC series win, thanks to topping the Panthers (16-21, 9-12 SLIAC) at CCA Field.
Solid pitching by both sides sent the game into extras, with runs at a premium. In the top of the 10th, Greenville had runners at first and second, with just one out. But MUW reliever
Campbell McCluney, rhe Owls' fourth pitcher of the day, struck out the next two batters to preserve the 3-3 deadlock.
Senior
Baron Brack continued his torrid hitting of late, smacking a ball to the fence in center for a triple. That forced the Panthers to issue a pair of intentional walks to first-baseman
Hastings Gibson and catcher
Michael O'Neill to try to set up a force play.
Marshall worked the count to 2-1 from GU's Gavin Ipanis. On the fourth pitch of the at-bat, Marshall stroked the ball through the left side of the infield, plating Brack with the winning run and setting of a frenzied celebration by the Owls.
For the game, Brack went 3-for-5 and scored twice. All three of Brack's hits were of the extra-base variety, with two triples and a double. He is the first player in MUW history to have multiple triples in a single game.
But Brack's pair of three-baggers wasn't the only "first" for the program on Saturday. In the top of the fifth, The W defense executed the first-ever triple play in program history, as well. The Panthers had runners at first and second with no outs, when Greenville's Bryce Hayes hit what looked like a Tiger Woods' "stinger" shot, just toward the right side of second base, with both runners taking off on what looked like a sure-fire single up the middle.
But Owls' second baseman
Zack Egan had other plans, diving to his right and flagging the liner in the air. As he lay prone on the ground, he flipped the ball to shortstop
Swayze Rikard, who stepped on second and then whipped the ball to Gibson at first to easily complete the three-kill, with both Panther runners hopelessly in no-man's land.
Besides Brack, fellow senior and leadoff man
Matthew Windham also had a big game, going 3-for-5, with two runs batted in. Among Windham's knocks was a lazar off of the brick wall in center, for a triple.
Zach Johnson (1-4) and Gibson (1-1) each had doubles.
MUW's quartet of pitchers did a creditable job in the "committee" game for the staff. Starter
Joseph Gantt and
Walker Smith each went 2.0 innings, with Gantt booking two strikeouts.
Josh Mackey was the third man in and went 2.2 frames. Each member of that trio was charged with a run.
McCluney finished off the final 3.1 innings of scoreless, two-hit, relief to earn the win and even his season record at 3-3. McCluney struck out five and walked just one.
With the Owls now finished with their regular season, the team will need to wait on results from around the SLIAC over the next week to determine their final position in the standings. The W can finish no worse than fourth, and would host a tournament game on May 5. The Owls could still, mathematically, be the No. 2 seed and receive a bye to the final four.
