Baseball Rebounds with a Homecoming Doubleheader Sweep Over Tougaloo

COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owls baseball team ends three game losing streak with back-to-back victories over Tougaloo College on Saturday, March 24. The W rebounded with a 11-6 victory in game one and an 8-6 win in game two to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Game One (11-6)
Freshman Pitcher Drew Williams improves to 4-3 on the season with the homecoming victory on the mound. The Maylene, Ala. native pitched 7.0 innings for four strikeouts, 10 hits, and five earned runs.

David Standifer, freshman utility player, entered the game in the top of the eight and pitched two innings for four strikeouts, one earned run, and two hits against. With the appearance, the Mobile, Ala. native received is first save of the season.

At the plate, RJ Cox and Damain Benefield led the Owls offense. Cox went 2-for-4 at the plate for four RBIs and one run while Benefield went 2-for-3 at the plate for two RBIs and two runs.

Other standouts were Prince Tolbert who collected one run and one RBIs on a 2-for-4 appearance and Leon "Trey" Petite who mirrored Tolbert in the outing, also going 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

In the match-up, The W scored 11 runs on 11 hits with three errors while holding the Bulldogs to six runs on 12 hits and seven errors.

Game Two (8-6)

In the second game, freshman pitcher Will Peters pitched the complete 7-inning game for three strikeouts, eight hits against, and six runs (five earned) for his fourth win of the season. The dual threat also took his turn at-bat for a 2-for-4 appearance with two runs and one RBI.

Offensively, Heath Ford led the Owls at the plate with two hits on three at-bats for three runs and one RBI. To lead the team in runs batted in, Damain Benefield and Bobby Neal collected two each to aid the team in its scoring effort.

Other Standout players for the Owls were Leon "Trey" Petite who had a 2-for-3 outing and Brandon Jones who had a 1-for-3 outing for one RBI.

Despite the close game, the Owls were able to out hit the Bulldogs 12-8 and keep their errors at one while Tougaloo committed three.

Up Next
The Owls baseball team will be back in action on Saturday, March 31 when they travel to Selma, Ala. to take on Selma University. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
