BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. - The W men's soccer team allowed a pair of goals in each half, falling at Blue Mountain College, 4-1. The loss evened the Owls season record at 6-6, while the Toppers improved to 7-6.
MUW and Blue Mountain were locked in a 0-0 battle for the first 20 minutes of the match. However, the contest seemed to turn on a dime after two quick scores from the Toppers.
Both goals came on near-identical shots and then a save on each by Owls' goaltender
David McCutchen. But in both cases, McCutchen couldn't control the loose ball and the rebounds were put back by BMC at the 20:12 and 21:00 minute marks. That score stood to halftime.
Blue Mountain added some insurance early in the second segment. Goals in the 56th and 68th minutes, making it 4-0.
Paulo Carneiro scored his fourth goal of the year in the 89th minute – unassisted – to get The W on the board, 4-1.
The Owls actually out-shot the Toppers by a 19-15 count. Both teams put eight shots on-goal. McCutchen had four saves, while his BMC counterpart thwarted seven shots on-frame by The W.
Vini Lopes had five shots, three on-goal, to lead MUW.
Jacob Vickers and
Asahel Salgado each took four tries for the Owls.
