BEREA, Ky. – The Mississippi University for Women suffered a 5-0 women's soccer setback on the road versus Berea College, but it certainly wasn't for lack of effort by the injury-plagued visitors. The Owls fell to 5-8 on the year.
If you just looked at the stat line – and not the scoreboard – you might envision a different final tally. The W women had 15 total shot attempts, compared to 19 by the Mountaineers. MUW had one more corner kick than did Berea, 5-4.
The difference in the contest came down to quality of each team's shots. While the Owls put a respectable seven of their tries directly on-goal, BC peppered The W nets with 13 shots on-frame, a hefty 68 percent.
That did not bode well for an MUW lineup that was minus six players due to an assortment of injuries, among them starting goalkeeper
Sarah Gilliland, and that left Head Coach
Catie Lyles with just three subs.
Sophomore
Caitlyn Fox (Saraland, Ala.) got the nod in the nets for the Owls and responded with eight saves, going all 90 minutes.
Senior
Hannah Helms (Southaven, Miss.) led MUW with five of her team's shot attempts, three of which were on-goal.
Leah Anderson (Leyland, U.K.) and
Adrianna Parsons (Springdale, Ark.) each took three shots and each put one shot on target. Senior
Shelby Harrington (Hattiesburg, Miss.) put both of her shots on-goal, as well.
The Owls will next travel to Talladega College on Tuesday (Oct. 19/3 p.m.).
