Owls women’s soccer keeps playoff hopes alive

OXFORD, Ala – The Mississippi University for Women kept its hopes alive for a berth in the United Small College Athletic Association (USCAA) women's soccer post-season championship tournament by virtue of its 2-1 win at Talladega College on Tuesday evening. The Owls (6-8) received votes in last week's USCAA poll and have two regular season matches remaining - including its home Senior Day contest this Saturday (1:30 p.m.) versus University of the Ozarks - to get in the top six of the final rankings.

MUW had a lackluster first half against the Tornadoes, but seemed to get its second wind in the final 45 minutes of play. TC led at the half, 1-0, before the Owls posted two unanswered goals in the second stanza and kept Talladega away from the net.

"The first half was very slow and we just didn't play our game," MUW Head Coach Catie Lyles stated. "After halftime we made a few adjustments and they started to settle down, and play more of our game. We have work to do moving forward this week, but we will celebrate this win."

Fifth-year senior Sarah Havens (Hurley, Miss.) got The W even with her team-leading eighth goal of the season at the 53:03-minute mark. Fellow senior Leah Anderson (Leyland, U.K.) assisted on the score that knotted the contest at 1-1.

Limiting the Tornadoes to just two shots-on-goal in the second half – both of which were turned away by The W goaltender Sarah Gilliland (Brandon, Miss.) – set the stage for the Owls' comeback.

On the afternoon, Gilliland had three total saves.

With less than five minutes left in regulation, Millie Mask netted the match-winning goal, unassisted. That provided the margin for the 2-1 victory, as MUW won for the second time in its last three outings.

"I'm so proud of the girls and this win," Mask said. "It started off rocky, but we came together and worked to get that win."

Overall, The W more than doubled up on the Tornadoes in shot attempts, 15-7. The Owls put seven of their attempts on-frame. MUW held a commanding 12-4 cushion in corner kicks, eight coming in the second half alone.
